Quarterly Career Tip: The "Hidden Job Market"
Updated: Oct 11
It’s a fact that more job opportunities exist in the “hidden job market” that are posted and advertised online. However, many job seekers are unfamiliar with how to access this rich market. Here are a few tips on how to gain entry and make the most of this hidden marketplace.
First, establish clarity around the type of job you want. What industries or disciplines are the most likely to have positions like the one you seek?
Develop a short, informative, and compelling “elevator speech.” People can't help you if they don’t know what you want or what you can bring to the table.
Identify interests and organizations associated with your potential field of work. Try to think about places where people gather to learn, discuss, and network.
Get out there! Attend a variety of functions or meetings with professionals in your ideal field. If you can’t afford the cost of a meeting, contact the organizer to see if you can get a complimentary invitation. The answer will be yes more often than you'd think.
You should also get involved with online discussion groups related to your profession or interest. LinkedIn and industry forums are two great places to start.
Just remember—before you ask someone about a job, help them get to know you. In business and in life, people like to work with people they know and trust. If you're interested in customizing this strategy for your specific career, give me a call to schedule a free 20-minute consultation.
